Nursery season 2012

Again this year, in Vivero el Pinar we have been planning and working hard to produce a healthy and high quality plant, capable of meeting the needs of our customers. Our expertise, with over 30 years of experience, and our weather condition at the plots, are key factors when making every year the height nursery.

About 50 ha have been planted in different points of the province of Segovia, and the variety that occupies the largest surface is Splendor. The fact of having started early the plantation, will allow us to obtain early and good quality runners for the subsequent production of pot plant, mini pot and tray plant.

The choice of varieties and formats responds to the results obtained in the previous season, the data recorded in our test plots as well as the experiences of our customers, which also provide an important source of information.

To carry out the nursery, we have the most modern means in the market, as well as the use of the leader techniques in the nursery industry that help us to execute a proper disinfection, optimum planting and crop development. These plants, which will be harvested around October, predict a superb best-quality strawberry production during the autumn-winter 2012-2013.

…and still going

Despite the atypical month of April we have suffered, with low temperatures and strong winds, the productions now comfortably exceed 700 grams. It is also maintained the good quality, going to productions that, if keep on this way, may surpass all records and compensate, partially, the low prices that we suffer from late Easter.

In April this year, unlike last year, Splendor not only did not downloaded fruiting, but also has produced continuously and without oscillations, surpassing all expectations and projections.

Dry weather and strong winds in mid April have led to a rapid ripening of the fruit, coinciding with a general fall in prices, causing the commitment of the sector by varieties as Splendor: early and well-behaved throughout the campaign. It thus ensures success, to achieve together in the same variety earliness, quality and total production.

Another aspect to highlight of Splendor, in this period of low prices, is that it involves lower collection costs than other varieties, so the profitability of the plantations is maintained, even with low prices.

With a view to next season, the reserves of plants by farmers continue apace; these are days where the thought is to choose the best variety and best nursery, coinciding with the last days of planting in height nurseries.

The planting for the fruit season begins

The planting of the strawberry varieties –bare root- for the fruit season 2012 has began. Along with our test plot, we have reached the 5 has of plants placed on substrate. The proper choice of varieties is one of the keys to success on the campaign. Later, we will begin with the trayplant, to be concluding at the end of this month. We are overcoming the inclemency of the weather, usual for this period of the year, to give the best care to the plants. This is the beginning of the fruit that we will find on the market from May.

Situation of Splendor variety, early april

At this time, exceeded the campaign equator, the variety SPLENDOR continues standing out in Huelva and confirming its good behaviour throughout the strawberry campaign.

Yields are higher than previous years; and it is being normal to find in many plantations, at March 31st, average yields around 500 grams per plant, from one end to another of the province. This confirms that at this time, Splendor is the variety most ” jack-of-all-trades” and more consistent and reliable in terms of production, from all the varieties that are planted in Huelva. All thanks to the know-how and exquisite care of farmers and technicians.

Splendor remains the preferred in the Spanish market. This year, the smaller size of the early fruit, due to the continued flowering, has ensured that farmers rely on Splendor for all kind of presentations and special works, done to the most demanding markets.

Although the rains finally came in recent days, and the cold that has been so detrimental to some plantations has moved away, there are not special phytosanitary problems, except for perhaps the rapid emergence this year of “trips” in some areas.

In recent weeks, coinciding with the highest peaks of production, the variety Splendor brings out one of its greatest strengths: the rapid collection and great performance by collector. This is an aspect to consider in times of maximum work and production, lowering costs of collection and overtaking here, clearly, the other varieties in the province.

The early production data, the uniformity of plantations and relatively good prices achieved so far, make that both farmers and growers, bet on Splendor for next campaign, coinciding with the beginning of the planting in height nurseries.

We have started to plant

This week we have started to plan tour strawberry plant nursery. We are going to plant 70 ha (172.97 acre), divided into different plots in the province of Segovia. Prior to this task, at the end of last month, we disinfected the plots that are being planted now; so a proper plant health in the nursery is ensured.

Although the strawberry season 2011-2012 is not finished yet, we have already begun to prepare the coming one. The planting will be phased and it will last 4 weeks.

Splendor at present (Huelva) – Assessment until March 1st

At this point in the campaign, its early part can be understood as finalised; the fact is that in March starts its bulk in Huelva. The most classical people say that the campaign is starting, for the rest is just continuing.. but we all hope the same: that the prices remain stable.

After a plantation with high temperatures, where thanks to the know-how and exquisite care of the farmers we did not see any root problem, in these weeks we have observed how all the varieties have developed in a special advanced way; in general it is said that probably 3 weeks ahead last year. The production is still high despite the cold in the last couple of weeks, which caused a considerably slowed down the plantations.

Splendor means already more than the 35% of the production in Huelva and therefore it is a referent in the market. Again this year the production started in the last days of 2011 and from then to now has been increasing, keeping good quality in the fruit except punctual problems with soft tip due to the significant temperature contrasts between day and night linked with dark days. The rest of the production is being really good, and we have found several fields with averages higher than 280 g per plant (1st category) at this point.

Regarding markets, Splendor remains the favourite in the national market, where its excellent flavour, perfect coloration and size are ideal; on the other hand, every time, more European supermarkets are asking for this variety to their farmers in Spain and Morocco, as this variety is more and more appreciated in the most exigent markets as England, France or Germany.

Official start of Plant Campaign 2011

Today has started the campaign of  strawberry plant in our nursery facilities. At 5 in the morning more than 480 workers have begun to select and pack the plants that we are  already sending to our clients.

Nursery Status July 2011

After three months of culture in the nursery we can say, generally speaking, that it is two to three weeks later than usual. This is something that we have observed in other nurseries in the area, as a result of the good temperatures in May and June. We think this may be good for the crop that will allow plants to gain maturity earlier and be in good shape in October. Anyway it is a bit too early to jump the gun as there is still a lot of Summer ahead.
Regarding the production, our main variety is still Splendor occupying more than 80% of our nursery, the rest continue  with “classic” varieties  of our program as Honor or Endurance, which are a success in certain areas. Another big part of the nursery varieties is testing. In this sense, we already have some selctions with very good features which we hope to be commercial in two or three years.

Presentation of Splendor Results 2011

On June 21th Vivero el Pinar and Plant Sciences presented, on Palos de la Frontera (Huevla) the final results of the Splendor Strawberry verity for the 2011 season.

The act, presented by Javier Esteban Director of Vivero el Pinar and Antonio Vazquez, Technical Director, was followed by more than sixty local farmers and technicians. During the presentation, It was summarized all production data of the Splendor variety developed by the Plant Science’s program in California, which is being cultivated in Huelva since 2005. Splendor has represented over 20% of the total production, among a total of 110 million plants and it is very probable i will achieve 30% next season with over 145 million plants.

Despite of the even campaign and the lack of grams per plan in all Splendor varieties, the average has reached a 740g-per-plant, with an early production of 430g before March 30th, which has lead Splendor to be, once again, the reference variety for the farmer, at an average profit of 16 cents per plant more than the rest of varieties on the market.

Regarding the behavior of the cultures, the settling of the plant was very good from the beginning. Despite the fact the plant was discharged in Aprile’s first forth night as a result of the high temperatures, the end of the season standards have been good, even if the season has finished earlier than usual.

We must point out the really interesting feedback at the end of the presentation, given by farmers and technicians, which will for sure enrich our knowledge and experience in order to obtain better results in the future

Actualidad Splendor

Sum up of the strawberry season in Huelva April 2010.

The present strawberry season in Huelva is being complicated, firstly due to the bad weather and heavy rains, and lately because of the bad prices. Regarding the varieties, Splendor is specially behaving well, and at this moment it is keeping on a perfect condition in most of the fields. Production is being very high and the quality of the fruit is also perfect. Splendor is showing itself to be the real alternative in Huelva’s market, compiting against the rest of the varieties in terms of quality and production. From Vivero El Pinar we continue working so that our growers obtain the best results with Splendor

HEAVY RAIN IN HUELVA

We have heard of the storm which is lashing the strawberry fields in Huelva these days. The losses are considerable and the full consequences will become clear over coming days.HUELVA INFORMACION and from EUROPAPRESS

FIRST SPLENDOR FRUITS

hese days we are in Huelva visiting our clients´ fields. At last we have seen the first Splendor fruits from bare-root plants (Splendor pot plants have started to be produced for more than 15 days), so all the fields we have seen are more or less at the same stage. As warmer regions are always more sensitive to weather, production is being a little earlier . The accompanying photo was taken today in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva).

THE DIGGING SEASON BEGINS

Today marks the beginning of the 2009 strawberry digging season at Vivero El Pinar. We now have 25 extremely intense days ahead of us, during which we expect to process around 40 million strawberry plants, with a workforce of 400. Weather conditions over the coming days will not be perfect for the work. Temperatures between 15ºC and 20ºC are forecast during the day and between 10ªC and 12ºC during the night. As per normal, we will be digging the nursery from early morning to sunup, and will be processing in the warehouse from 5 in the morning to midday. We are expecting an average production of 2.2 million plants per day. Our €œstar€ variety this season is Splendor, our strongest commitment for some years now, which is becoming consolidated on the Spanish and Moroccan markets.

SUMMARY OF 2009 SELECTION SEASON.

At El Pinar we finished the plant digging on the 22nd of October. The season was complicated from a meteorological point of view, since temperatures were very high during the entire season except for two days during the second week. This made us take great care of processes to prevent the possible overheating of the plants. In total we have processed 40 million plants at El Pinar, of which 85% was Splendor, and the remaining 15% was shared between Honor, Virtue, and a few small tests.

IT´S STRAWBERRY TIME, IT´S SPLENDOR TIME

After the rain, the calm returned, or that was how it seemed, the weather however, is not stabilizing, there are still some days with strong winds in the province of Huelva, and low temperatures and cloudy days in general. Nevertheless, our Splendor variety is performing very well, standing out from the rest and becoming the most favourite one for the markets. The photo accompanying this new shows Splendor in Huelva on the 12th of January in a field in the village of Moguer (Huelva).
